A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen people were hurt in what appears to be premeditated blast caused by gas at a country home in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation took place as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the property in the vicinity of Verona to enforce an eviction order for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

The three victims who died served in the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals were arrested at the site and a third person who fled after the incident was apprehended soon after. All three have been transported to the hospital.

The detonation could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the area revealed the property left as a mass of wreckage.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to evict the three siblings in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The president of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, stated the residence was subject to an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accrued by the siblings.

Mediators had been assigned to engage the family members who had locked themselves into the home. When the officers reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the residents set off the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander the police commander stated to the media.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the explosion precisely impacted our members,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also located at the property, the interior minister said.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the incident comprised 11 other members of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

He believed the detonation had happened on a level above the access point and stated to reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the blast, he mentioned personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents told reporters, mentioning that the three had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in paying tribute to the three officers who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
