A massive bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the new year.

The winning offer for the 535-pound fish was submitted by the parent firm of a well-known sushi chain, which manages outlets throughout Japan and internationally.

"An inaugural tuna signals good luck," stated the business owner, a regular participant at the annual first sale.

Dubbed the Tuna Tycoon, this businessman is renowned for placing substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile January auctions.

Auction Surprise and Historic Precedent

Following the auction, the winner told the press that he was "surprised at the final price," noting, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."

This new purchase tops his previous record purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He spent 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite previously saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to break his own record once again.

A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids

The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously associated with exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which announced the fish would be served at its locations across Japan.

The frenetic activity at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

From Auction to Plate

The multi-million-dollar tuna was quickly prepared for customers at the bidder's sushi establishments shortly after the auction ended.

"I believe like I've begun the year in a positive way after tasting something so auspicious as the year gets underway," said one elated patron.
